Origin

Button mushrooms originated in France, where they were first cultivated around Paris in the late 1600s. At that time, button mushrooms were primarily served in exclusive restaurants. Nowadays mushrooms are grown worldwide, including in the Netherlands. Here, they are typically cultivated in special mushroom cells on carefully prepared growing mediums. By growing them in the dark, they acquire their bright white colour.
