Frutesa has been trading for 37 years and has grown into a successful business on the strength of the passion and dedication of its employees and partners. “Many of our employees have spent their entire working lives with Frutesa, and we have been working with many of our growers for decades. These stable relationships are extremely valuable to us,” says Luis Teo Pineda of Frutesa.

The company’s core values are integrity, equality, excellence, quality and transparency – five core values that are used as guiding principles in their dealings with every supplier, employee and customer. Frutesa is one of the founding members of Fundarveja, a foundation set up by Guatemalan vegetable exporters to improve the living standards of growers and their families and their children’s education. Frutesa has worked hand in hand with thousands of small producers and their workers to ensure good profitability and progress for their families and communities. “We sign contracts with our growers and provide technical assistance, training, supervision and financial support to enable them to grow top quality products with all the relevant certifications,” Luis Teo says. “In recent times, their lives have changed forever. Our country has grown from a traditional subsistence economy into one that plays a significant role in the world economy. We are hugely proud of the fact that we have been a major factor in bringing about these positive changes.”

This flat, crispy and slightly sweet tasting mangetout is unmissable in the world cuisine. Mangetouts are the young pods of a type of peas, but unlike many pea varieties, is it not harvested for the peas but for the whole pod. That is because the peas are miniscule.

“Partners for more than 30 years”

“In 1983 my mother Gloria Polanco started exporting Guatemalan mangoes to the United Kingdom. When the first export customers expressed an interest in other fruit and vegetables from Guatemala, she saw an opportunity to start exporting all the wonderful products Guatemala has to offer,” Luis Teo explains. “Back then, Bud Holland was the first company to launch sugar snaps onto the European market and has been our regular partner for 36 of the 37 years that Frutesa has been trading.” Luis Teo and Clark Macdonald joined the company later on, and this close-knit team has since gone on to set up a stable network exporting to 10 different countries.
