Coconut; the taste of summer!
Days are getting longer, the sun is showing itself more often and the temperatures are rising.. Summer is on the horizon! Time for sunny parties, tropical tunes and our ultimate summer favorite: the coconut!
Coconuts instantly bring to mind white sandy beaches, swaying palm trees and summery cocktails. Despite the name ‘coconut’, it’s not actually a nut, but a stone fruit. With its tropical appearance, refreshing juice and creamy flesh, the coconut is the ultimate symbol of summer.
Coconuts grow on the coconut palm and are often picked by hand. This can be done by experienced climbers who climb the coconut trees and cut off the ripe coconuts with a machete or other cutting tool. This is a labor-intensive process that requires a lot of skill and experience, but it allows pickers to be selective and harvest only the ripe coconuts. Some farmers use long sticks with a blade or hook on the end to remove coconuts from the tree without having to climb.
Coconuts go through several stages before they are fully ripe. Each stage has its own unique shape, color, and contents, offering surprising possibilities in the kitchen. Meet this tropical family!

The green young coconut is different from the mature, brown coconut because of its soft, green skin and a not yet fully developed core. Young coconuts
A young coconut is a coconut of which the outside is still green and not yet hairy and dark brown. These green, young coconuts are from Thailand and after picking, they are stripped of their green bark by cutting them down in the shape of a house. That saves you a lot of work! The juice of the young coconut is wonderfully refreshing and the soft flesh also tastes fantastic. Perfect for desserts and tropical bowls.

Brown coconuts
When it’s picked, it’s still in a green husk. When you remove the husk, the hairy woody ‘nut’ appears, which contains delicious coconut meat and coconut water. There are three dark brown dots on the coconut. You can use the softest one to make a hole with a screwdriver or a narrow knife. Than drain the coconut water and drink it or process it in a smoothie, cocktail or fruit juice.
