COCONUTS

Green coconuts

The green young coconut is different from the mature, brown coconut because of its soft, green skin and a not yet fully developed core. It has a thinner, softer layer of flesh and lots of delicious, refreshing coconut water. Coconut water is packed with electrolytes, making it the perfect natural sports drink for hydration.

Origin

In many cases, coconuts are picked by hand. This can be done by experienced climbers who climb the coconut trees and cut off the ripe coconuts with a machete or other cutting tool. This is a labor-intensive process that requires a lot of skill and experience, but it allows pickers to be selective and harvest only the ripe coconuts. Some farmers use long sticks with a blade or hook on the end to remove coconuts from the tree without having to climb.

How to store

Store green coconuts unopened in a cool place or in the refrigerator. They have a long shelf life here.

How to eat

Find the ‘eyes’ of the coconut – these are the three dark dots on the top. Use a sharp knife or drill to make a hole in one of these eyes. The juice can be drained here. Now you have to break open the coconut. You can drop the coconut on a hard surface until it cracks, or you can use a large knife to open it by tapping it until it breaks. Once the coconut is open, you can scoop out the white flesh with a spoon. The flesh can be eaten raw or used in various dishes, such as smoothies, salads or desserts.
