Discover Ecuador, the treasure chest of exotic fruits!

Vibrant Ecuador is home to perhaps the tastiest and most unusual exotic fruits in the world. Ecuador is a country in the northwest of South America through which the equator, (in Spanish, the ‘Ecuador’), cuts across. From the Amazon rainforest to the highlands and coastal areas; Ecuador’s rich biodiversity makes for an abundance of surprising fruit in vibrant colours with exotic scents. The treasure chest of exotic fruits!

Ecuador’s cuisine is strongly influenced by its different regions, each offering its own specific culinary specialties. This makes Ecuador’s gastronomy very diverse and very popular with its unique ingredients. In Ecuadorian cuisine, exotic fruits are important ingredients. One of the traditional dishes which is regularly on the menu are the crispy tostones, made of plantains and often served with a spicy dip called ‘Aji Criollo’. Kiwano is part of the cucumber family and has an oval shape with small spikes, for this reason the kiwano is also called ‘horned melon’. The inside of a kiwano contains many chambers with jelly-like seeds. The inside of a kiwano is edible and has a fresh taste.

2. Maracuja

The maracuja completes our beautiful assortment of passion fruit varieties . The fruit flesh is surprisingly refreshing and taste a bit more acid than the normal passion fruit. It’s delicious to spoon it out or to use in a salad, dessert or cocktail.

3. Guanabana

Guanabana is also called soursop and is a fruit in the anonna family. It has an oval, spiny appearance and consist of juicy pulp with a sour-sweet taste. Many people believe that guanabana has healing powers. This is one of the reasons that the guanabana became so popular.

4. Yellow pitahaya

This beautiful, scaly cactus fruit is related to the pink pitahaya; also called dragon fruit. The inside of a yellow pitahaya consists of white, slightly sweet and aromatic pulp. Yellow pitahaya are known to be sweeter and creamier than the pink variety.

5. Cacao fruit

This impressive, highly ribbed, green, red or yellow fruit grows on the cacao tree. There are a lot of cacao beans inside the cacao fruit. The dry cacao bean is used to make chocolate. But the cacao beans and the pulp can also be eaten as a snack and that is a very tasty taste experience!

6. Plantain

These bulky bananas differ from regular bananas in the sense that they cannot be eaten raw. The plantain is at its best when you wait until it has turned completely dark.

7. Red banana

To get straight to the point: red bananas are completely natural! The red colour is caused by the antioxidant betcarotene. And under this beautiful, reddish-brown skin hides a delicious soft banana that is even sweeter than the well-known yellow banana. Definitely worth a try!
