Garlic fiesta!

April 19 is Garlic Day and what better way to celebrate this day than with… garlic! It’s a perfect moment to take a closer look at garlic: how does it grow, how can you use it and what varieties are there?

Garlic is a bulb that has been grown and used for thousands of years and originates from the steppes of Central Asia. Garlic is related to the onion and, like its cousin, grows underground. A long stem with leaves grows from the bulb above ground, from which after a while even a flower can grow. In the Middle Ages it was not only eaten but also used on ceremonial occasions and it was believed that garlic could protect you against vampires and witches. Fact or myth? Either way, you can’t go wrong with garlic at home!

Over the years, this flavorful bulb has found its way into various cuisines worldwide, from Mediterranean dishes to Asian cuisine. In Italy they make the most delicious authentic pasta sauces with it, and in Japan they make marinades to die for. The possibilities of garlic are endless!

Garlic is loved by many for its versatility and aromatic nature. It is the basic seasoning for many dishes whether you bake, fry, smoke, roast or consume it raw. Prepare the entire bulb or use some individual cloves and chop them finely, cut it into slices or use a garlic press. You can use it with meat, fish, pasta or vegetable dishes. One thing is for sure… Garlic adds burst of flavour!

The most well-known variety of garlic is dried garlic, which has secured a permanent place in many kitchens. Alongside this classic, there are other delightful varieties such as elephant garlic, smoked garlic, fresh garlic and black garlic. We would like to introduce you to all members of our garlic family and share a recipe for a delicious saffran risotto with, of course… garlic!
